Paperboy

Paperboy is a 1985 arcade game developed and published by Atari Games. The player takes the role of a paperboy who delivers a fictional newspaper called "The Daily Sun" along a suburban street on his bicycle. The game was ported to a wide range of video game consoles and personal computers. The Nintendo Entertainment System version is the first NES game developed in the United States, and the Sega Master System version represented the first SMS game developed in the United Kingdom. Paperboy is notable for its unusual theme, which extends to using bike handlebars as the controller. A sequel for home computers and consoles, Paperboy 2, was released in 1991.

Mach Rider (1985)

Mach Rider (マッハライダー, Mahha Raidā) is a futuristic driving video game created by Nintendo. It was first released in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The Family Computer version can use the Famicom Data Recorder to save custom tracks. It was released on the Virtual Console for the Wii (2007), Nintendo 3DS (2013) and Wii U (2014). While the feature was only available in the Famicom version in the original releases, all versions of the Virtual Console release except for the 3DS version can save custom tracks.

M.U.S.C.L.E.: Tag Team Match

Tag Team Match: M.U.S.C.L.E. (キン肉マン マッスルタッグマッチ, Kinnikuman: Massuru Taggu Matchi, "Kinnikuman Muscle Tag Match") is based on characters from Yudetamago's manga and anime series Kinnikuman. It has eight playable characters, each with his own special move. The game was followed by a 1987 Japan-only sequel for the Famicom Disk System titled, Kinnikuman: Kinniku-sei Ōi Sōdatsusen (キン肉マン キン肉星王位争奪戦, Kinnikuman: Scramble for the Throne).

The Arc of Yesod

The Monolith, object of the previous game, teleported off into space just as Charlemagne 'Charlie' Fotheringham-Grunes was completing his quest. He has followed it to its home planet of Ariat and must now finally destroy it, before the Ariatians download the data it has collected and employ it to destroy the Earth.

Terra Cresta

Terra Cresta is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up. The player controls a ship, initially with limited firepower. Numbered pods appear containing further parts of the ship that will increase firepower. These additional parts combine with the player's ship to increase its firepower, and the final module transforms it into a fiery phoenix which is invulnerable for a certain period of time. Once the ship has multiple sections, the player may also split it, allowing it to fire in multiple directions. The player begins with three lives and it is possible to play with either one or two players.

Alcazar: The Forgotten Fortress

In this adventure game you control an explorer who's on his way to fortress Alcazar. To reach Alcazar you are travelling through a countryside of fortresses and you need to collect several items that you can find along the way. Once you enter the Alcazar fortress you have to search for the crown. The strategy map gives you an overview of the countryside, it's fortresses and your location in it. What perils lurk in these mysterious castles? Which path is quick and safe? The Alcazar castle is three stories high, all other castles have only two stories. To enter a castle you just have to follow the path. Each castle has it's own sought-after objects and these objects are always guarded by the castles main demon. Objects to look for are for example: a rope, a gun, raw meat, water or a raft. Collect them and use them properly to master the legendary Alcazar fortress.

Roller Coaster

Roller Coaster is a platform-based game which contains some strategy and puzzle elements. Uniquely it holds the claim of being the first video game to ever simulate amusement rides. Roller Coaster was released in 1985 by British video game developer Elite Systems, to overwhelmingly positive reviews. It was, for a time, one of the most popular games for the ZX Spectrum. The game takes place in and around an amusement park after closing-time. The player takes control of the park's owner, Colonel G. Bogey. A disgruntled employee has scattered the takings all over the fairground in the form of money bags. The goal is to collect the money.

The player flies a BD5J, a small agile jet. The player has to complete a series of eight stunt courses and routines with the jet. For example, in one set, the player has to fly the plane around a series of pylons. In another, the player must fly a figure eight. Stunts get harder as play progresses. Some game parameters, such as weather, are configurable. There are ten acrobatic events which can be played by up to four players at four levels of difficulty. In all ten events the player must fly over a series of obstacles.

Doomdark's Revenge (1985)

Doomdark's Revenge is a role-playing and strategy video game developed by Mike Singleton and published by Beyond Software for the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC in 1985. It is a sequel to Singleton's 1984 seminal The Lords of Midnight and has similar game mechanics but adds more detail and complexity with the number of characters and locations increased. In Doomdark's Revenge, the hero of the first game, Luxor the Moonprince, goes into the savage wastes of Icemark to save his son Morkin and defeat the evil Empress Shareth, daughter of his enemy Doomdark. Despite what the title suggests, Doomdark himself, who was killed in the first game, does not actually return in the sequel. Like its predecessor, Doomdark's Revenge was a major critical success and a commercial hit. It was supposed to be followed the sequel titled Eye of the Moon in 1989, which was never finished. Another sequel, Lords of Midnight: The Citadel, was eventually released in 1995.

Outlaws (1985)

Outlaws is a video game for the Commodore 64 developed and released by Ultimate Play the Game in 1985. In a break from earlier arcade adventure titles such as The Staff of Karnath and Entombed, Outlaws is a straightforward shooter game and does not feature the aristocrat adventurer, Sir Arthur Pendragon. Outlaws was released on the Commodore 64 at the same time as another wild west-themed title, Gunfright, for the ZX Spectrum. The game was created by brothers Dave and Robert (Bob) Thomas.

Silent Service (1985)

Silent Service is a submarine simulator video game designed completely by Sid Meier and published by MicroProse for various 8-bit home computers in 1985 and for 16-bit systems like the Amiga in 1987. A Nintendo Entertainment System port of Silent Service developed by Rare was published in 1989 by Konami in Europe and by Konami's Ultra Games subsidiary in North America. The follow-up game, Silent Service II, was released in 1990. Tommo purchased the rights to this game and digitally publishes it through its Retroism brand in 2015.

Super Punch-Out!! (スーパーパンチアウト!!, Sūpā Panchi-Auto!!) is a 1984 arcade game by Nintendo. It is a boxing game with the same gameplay and digitized speech of its arcade precursor, Punch-Out!!. This second game in the Punch-Out!! series introduced recurring video games characters such as Bear Hugger, Dragon Chan, Vodka Drunkenski (whose name was changed to Soda Popinski in later releases), Great Tiger and Super Macho Man.

10-Yard Fight (10ヤードファイト, Ten Yādo Faito) is a 1983 American football arcade game that was developed and published in Japan by Irem and published in the United States by Taito and in Europe by Electrocoin.

Wishbringer

Wishbringer: The Magick Stone of Dreams is an interactive fiction computer game written by Brian Moriarty and published by Infocom in 1985. It was intended to be an easier game to solve than the typical Infocom release and provide a good introduction to interactive fiction for inexperienced players, and was very well received.

Binary Land

In this game, you have to guide two penguins, one male and one female, through top-down vertical levels. The penguins are in love with each other and must be re-united! The penguins start on opposite sides, separated by walls, bricks, and other obstacles. You take control of one of the penguins. The other makes exactly the same movements as you, but in the opposite direction. So if for example you see an enemy to the left of the penguin you are not controlling, you have to fire to the right in order to hit it. You have to reach the top of the level in such a way that the two penguins will arrive at the top square at the same time, coming from opposite sides. Enemies such as spiders will put web on your way or attack you. You can kill them for points. There are various power-ups that appear randomly on the levels. You should also be careful not to run out of time.

Moebius: The Orb of Celestial Harmony

Moebius: The Orb of Celestial Harmony is a video game produced by Origin Systems and designed by Greg Malone. It was originally released in 1985 for the Apple II series of personal computers. Versions were also released for the Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Macintosh, and MS-DOS. The game is primarily a top-down view tile-based role-playing video game, but it has action-based combat sequences which use a side view, roughly similar to games such as Karateka. Origin Systems produced a sequel to the game, entitled Windwalker.

Field Combat is a 1985 shooter video game developed and published by Jaleco for arcades.

Turbo Sub

Turbo Sub released in 1985 as an arcade shooter game by Entertainment Sciences. Then later in 1991 for the Atari Lynx. The arcade version was a one player game set in the future where you control a submersible ship against a horde of aliens. The Atari Lynx version is the same but can be played with two players and tells us the story is set in the 28th century on Earth. The planet has been invaded and the goal of the game is that the player must destroy all the aliens.

Pac-Land (1985)

Pac-Land (パックランド, Pakku-Rando) is an entry in the Pac-Man series of arcade video games, released into arcades by Namco, and its American distributor Bally Midway (later Midway Games), in August 1984. It was the first Namco arcade game to use the then-new arcade system later titled Namco Pac-Land. Pac-Land features parallax scrolling for some of the background elements, a feature that would not become commonplace until the 16-bit console era began much later.

Tau Ceti

Humanity has spread out and colonised nearby star systems but a plague in 2150 led to the colonies being abandoned and left to their automated robotic maintenance systems. While several of these colonies have been successfully re-inhabited, the colony on the planet Tau Ceti III (orbiting the star Tau Ceti) has been uncontactable since a meteor smashed into the planet. A mission sent to Tau Ceti III in 2164 landed on the planet but broadcast a mayday message followed by silence. Experts decided that the planet's robots were running amok as a result of the meteorite impact. The only chance, it was decided, of successfully stopping the defence systems without destroying the cities already there is to send a single pilot in an armoured Gal-Corp skimmer to the planet's surface with the task of shutting-down the central reactor in Tau Ceti III's capital, Centralis.

Thing on a Spring

The evil Goblin has used his magical abilities to ensnare all the toys in the neighborhood to go into his underground lair. Thing bounces to the rescue, and resolves to retrieve them from his 4 storey underground lair. To do this he must collect 9 pieces of a jigsaw puzzle on each floor. Needless to say, Goblin has not made things easy - a myriad of traps await our intrepid hero. There are traps all over, some crucial areas are guarded by switches, and the last of these switches locks the level-ending lift.

Gun.Smoke is a 1985 vertical scrolling shooter arcade game by Capcom. This Wild West-themed game was designed by Yoshiki Okamoto. Gun.Smoke centers on a character named Billy Bob in the NES version, a bounty hunter who is after vicious criminals of the Wild West.

Star Trek: The Kobayashi Alternative

You replay the recovery of the USS Heinlein, which was under the command of Captain Sulu when it got lost under suspicious circumstances in the 145 Trianguli area while on a classified mission. The main reason for simulating the incident is to ascertain if the rescue mission is a viable alternative for the Kobayashi Maru training mission for space cadets at Starfleet Academy.

Karateka (1985)

Karateka is a 1984 martial arts action game by Jordan Mechner, and was his first published game, created while attending Yale University. It was originally programmed for the Apple II, then widely ported. The game was published in North America by Brøderbund, and in Europe by Ariolasoft. Along with Swashbuckler (1982), Karate Champ (1984), and Yie-Ar Kung Fu (1985), Karateka was one of the earliest fighting games. The player controls an unnamed protagonist who is attempting to rescue his love interest, the Princess Mariko, from Akuma's castle fortress. The game exhibits a combination of a side-scrolling platform and fighting game elements similar to a beat 'em up. The player uses punches and kicks to defeat Akuma and his guards and make his way deeper into the fortress. A 2013 remake, spearheaded by Mechner, was released in 2013 as a downloadable title for the Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and iOS.

Balloon Fight (バルーンファイト, Barūn Faito) is an action video game developed by Nintendo. The original arcade version was released for the Nintendo VS. System as Vs. Balloon Fight, and its Nintendo Entertainment System counterpart was internationally released in 1986. The gameplay is similar to the 1982 game Joust from Williams Electronics. The home Nintendo Entertainment System version was ported to the NEC PC-8801 in October 1985, the Sharp X1 in November 1985, the Game Boy Advance as Balloon Fight-e for the e-Reader in the United States on September 16, 2002, and as part of the Famicom Mini Series in Japan on May 21, 2004.

Spooks is an action-adventure game where the goal is to collect eight musical boxes and play them at the exit. The game is set in and around a large mansion which is haunted by four ghosts against which you can defend by throwing large or heavy objects at. Around the mansion there are many rooms and many items whose function you need to figure out in order to complete the game. Adding to the suspense is the need to be on alert for the ghosts as they move quite fast and also that when in inventory menu you only get a short time to make your decisions.

Ballyhoo is an interactive fiction computer game designed by Jeff O'Neill and published by Infocom in 1985. It was released for ten different 8 and 16-bit platforms, including MS-DOS, Atari ST, and Commodore 64. It is Infocom's nineteenth game. With a circus-themed plot, the game's tagline was "Big-time suspense under the Big Top!"

Metro-Cross

Metro-Cross is a platform arcade game that was released by Namco in 1985. It runs upon Namco Pac-Land hardware (but with a video system like that used in Dragon Buster, modified to support a 2048-color palette). It uses a Motorola M6809 microprocessor, with a Hitachi HD63701 sub-microprocessor (both running at 1.536 MHz) and Namco 8-channel waveform PSG for audio. The player must take control of a man known only as Runner, who is given a time limit to run through each of the game's thirty-two rounds while avoiding obstacles and collecting drink cans. The actual running happens automatically: the job of the player is to avoid the obstacles and collect the cans by moving the Runner with the stick and adjusting his speed accordingly. If the Runner finishes the round within the time limit, the remaining time will be awarded to him as bonus points and he will proceed to the next round. Every fourth round is special, using the remaining time from the three previous ones as additional time. However, if the Runner has not finished the round by the time the time limit runs out, he will be electrocuted and the game will immediately be over.

Players create a variety of monsters and equip them with futuristic and modern weapons to do battle. Two players can play and compete at the same time and fight each other, or play capture the flag. Monsters can be stored on diskette and can be upgraded by victories against other monsters or computer opponents

Rocketball

Rocketball is based on the futuristic sports movie Rollerball, released in 1975. The computer game is similar to Roller Derby in that two teams on roller skates travel counter-clockwise around a banked, circular track. The object of the game is to score points by throwing a softball-sized metal ball into a cone-shaped goal target inset into the wall of the arena. Balls are fired into play, in the same direction players skate, by cannons when play begins and to restart play after the ball rolls out of play or a goal is scored.

Soccer (サッカー, Sakkā) is a video game produced by Intelligent Systems and Nintendo as part of its Sports Series for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was released in Japan in 1985, in the United States at launch in 1985 and in Europe in 1987. It was also released for the Family Computer Disk System in 1986. It is also available on the Virtual Console since June 12, 2014, to be bought from the Wii Shop Channel and the Wii U Nintendo eShop.
