Detektivka Hazel Micallef (Susan Sarandon) si poklidně žije ve společnosti své matky (Ellen Burstyn), utišujících léků a alkoholu. Brutální vražda v sousedství ale jejím nerušeným životem pořádně zatřese. S pomocí svého kolegy (Gil Bellows) a policejního nováčka (Topher Grace) odhaluje sérii podobných vražd, ke kterým došlo v celé zemi.
