Novinář Eddie Brock se stává hostitelem mimozemského symbionta jménem Venom. Už dlouhé roky se snaží odhalit pravou tvář Carltona Drakea, uznávaného vědce a šéfa společnosti Life Foundation. Jeho vytrvalé pátrání se však postupně mění v posedlost, která zničí nejen jeho kariéru, ale i vztah s přítelkyní Anne. Vše se změní ve chvíli, kdy se Eddie stane součástí jednoho z Drakeových experimentů a do jeho těla pronikne mimozemský organismus Venom. Náhle získává mimořádné schopnosti a sílu, o jaké se mu nikdy nesnilo. S novou mocí však přichází i temná stránka — Venom je nevyzpytatelný, agresivní a nebezpečný. Eddie se proto zoufale snaží udržet své nové schopnosti pod kontrolou, i když ho jejich síla zároveň fascinuje a přitahuje. Postupně si Eddie a Venom uvědomují, že jeden bez druhého nemohou dosáhnout svých cílů. Jejich spojení se stále prohlubuje, až začíná být těžké rozlišit, kde končí Eddie a kde začíná Venom.
