Film s podivným názvem je celovečerní adaptací velmi populárního dětského seriálu vysílaného od roku 1999 stanicí Nickleodeon. z USA Z USA sice doputoval až do Británie, Japonska, Jižní Koreje i našich sousedů Německa a Polska, ale v naší zemičce příběhy mycí houby jménem Bob (anglicky se houba řekne "sponge" - odtud název) budou známé opravdu málokomu. Vězte tedy, že film co do námětu nedělá ostudu svému názvu a je taky pěkně praštěný: SpongeBob žije na dně oceánu v ananasu a pracuje jako kuchař v místní restauraci. Jednoho dne naskočí se svým kámošem Patrickem na hamburger a společně putují oceánem (a zřejmě nejen jím) a zažijí přitom - jak jinak - řadu báječných příhod. Potkají mimojiné pár pěkných příšer a samozřejmě dospějí k poznání, že život je tak krásný!
