Pro muže, který si jako úkol dal najít další skvělou hororovou předlohu, je pouze otázkou času, než se stane novou obětí těchto děsivých knih. Newyorský literární agent David Lamont se přestěhuje do tří podlažního luxusního bytu na Manhattanu. Brzy po nastěhování začne dostávat fotografie z násilných zločinů, které byly nafoceny v jeho novém bytě. Tyto zneklidňující fotky jsou brzy doplněny o videokazetu, na které je zaznamenán každý Davidův pohyb. Den ode dne je David blíže nejděsivější noční můře, kterou tak intenzivně hledá v knižních předlohách.
