Píše se rok 1951 a hollywoodský scenárista Peter Appleton dostává předvolání, aby se dostavil k výslechu před Výbor pro vyšetřování neamerické činnosti. Appleton však náhodou havaruje s autem a při nehodě ztratí paměť. Skončí v městečku, kde ho považují za pohřešovaného válečného hrdinu Lukea Trimbleho. Všichni, včetně Lukeho přítelkyně, oslavují jeho návrat, vojákův otec (oscarový vítěz Martin Landau) šťastně vítá svého "syna". Společně opraví a dají do pořádku místní kino The Majestic, ale když Appleton uvidí film, k němuž napsal scénář, paměť se mu vrátí. Nyní stojí před nelehkou volbou - zda se má navrátit k bývalému životu nebo zůstat v tom novém, který si zamiloval.
