Alex Fletcher je vybledlá popová hvězda 80. let, o kterou je zájem už jen mezi skalními nostalgiky, kteří navštěvují vesnické zábavy. Jednoho dne jej kontaktuje médii oslavovaná hvězdička Cora Corman, která jej požádá, aby jí napsal písně na její nové album a ještě si s ní zazpíval duet. Každý má právo na svůj comeback, jenže Alex už celé roky nesložil ani notu a psaní textu mu nikdy dvakrát nešlo. Jenže teď má během několika málo dnů přijít s hitem. V tu chvíli do příběhu vstoupí kouzelně nepředvídatelná květinářka Sophie, jejíž schopnost hrát si se slovy se Alexovi docela hodí. Sophie má za sebou neúspěšný vztah se spisovatelem Sloanem Catesem a tak se jí do spolupráce s Alexem, který co do vztahů nemá právě dobrou pověst, dvakrát nechce. Jenže krev není voda, srdci neporučíš a hudba má nebývalou moc. Alex i Sophie si postupně uvědomují, že pokud chtějí najít lásku a uspět, budou se svým obavám muset postavit...
