Za druhé světové války se britské letectvo již poněkolikáté pokouší zničit přehrady v Porúří. Zatím masivní ochranné zdi všechny útoky přestály. RAF tedy žádá konstruktéry bomb, aby vymysleli něco, čemu by přehrady neodolaly. Této nesmírně náročné práce se ujme Barnes Wallis (Michael Redgrave), kterému v provedení stojí mnoho překážek...
