Tento film vypráví příběh tří lidí, které nějakým způsobem postihla smrt. George (Matt Damon) je americký dělník, který má zvláštní napojení na posmrtný život. Na druhé straně světa prožije francouzská novinářka Marie (Cécile De France) okamžik, kdy se ocitne blízko smrti, což naprosto otřese jejím vnímáním reality. A když londýnský školák Marcus ztratí nejbližšího člověka, potřebuje nutně odpovědi na otázky, které s odchodem milované osoby vyvstávají. Každý je na cestě za hledáním pravdy, jejich životy se protnou a navždy změní tím, v co věří, že by mohlo být – nebo musí být – po životě.
