Píše se rok 1957. Mladé posluchače BBC uchvátí zábavné skeče “Šašků,” skupiny komediálních anarchistů se sklonem k absurdnímu humoru. Jedním z géniů v této skupině je Peter Sellers, herec s nenaplněnými filmovými ambicemi, kterého až příliš starostlivá matka Peg nutí k agresivnějšímu sebeprosazování. Možná i díky tomu mladý herec uspěje a získá filmovou roli po boku italské krásky Sophie Lorenové, do níž se beznadějně zamiluje. Šťastně vdaná herečka ho sice odmítne, ale na jeho nenaplněné lásce ani na rozpadu manželství s Anne to nemůže nic změnit.
