Když americký spisovatel Mark Halliday navštíví čerstvě vdanou Margot Wendice v Londýně, nevědomky tím spustí řetězec vydírání a vražd. Manžel Margot, Tony Wendice, si všimne jejích citů k Hallidayovi, začne se obávat rozvodu a s ním spojeného vydědění, a tak naplánuje její smrt. K tomu využije svého bývalého spolužáka Lesgateho, který je již zapleten do nezákonné činnosti.
