Příjezd filmařů do malého ospalého městečka způsobí, že tu nezůstane kámen na kameni. Waterford je malinkaté a ospalé městečko ve státě Vermont. Mladá, půvabná Carla zde roznáší v bufetu kávu, knihovnice Annie se celým srdcem věnuje ochotnickému divadlu, pan doktor po ulicích trousí životní moudra a syn starosty se snaží stát politickým zvířetem. Nefunguje zde semafor a na hlavní třídě je už několik let v silnici díra. Tento poklid má být ale brzy narušen. Waterford si totiž vyhlédli filmaři s režisérem Waltem Pricem v čele a hodlají zde po nějaký čas točit. Jejich příjezd okamžitě vzbudí velké pozdvižení a oni sami mají velkou zásluhu na tom, že tu nezůstane kámen na kameni.
