Vždy elegantně oblečený policista Ray Tango a jeho kolega nedbalého zevnějšku Gabe Cash patří k nejvýkonnějším ochráncům zákona v Los Angeles a důkladně znepříjemňují život a obchody mocnému gangsterskému šéfovi Perretovi. Místo, aby je nechal zavraždit, rozhodne se Perret zbavit se svých protivníků promyšleným způsobem. Oba policisté jsou vylákáni do opuštěného skladiště a pomocí zfalšovaného magnetofonového pásku obviněni z vraždy federálního agenta. Jsou posláni do vězení, kde se setkávají s řadou svých bývalých nepřátel, dychtících po pomstě. S přispěním policejního kapitána, který za vším tuší nekalou hru zločineckého podsvětí, se jim podaří za dramatických okolností uprchnout. Oba do té doby velcí rivalové Tango a Cash jsou nuceni spolupracovat, aby očistili svou pověst. Nedá jim mnoho práce zjistit, kdo za celým komplotem vězí.
