Jef Costello je osamělý nájemný vrah, pracující s chirurgickou přesností. Jeho životní postoj se podobá samurajské filozofii. Ačkoliv sledujeme především podrobný záznam ze života hlavního hrdiny, přece jen se postupně vynoří dramatická zápletka. Jeden z jeho zločinů má totiž svědka, ale hlavní hrdina se přesto nebojí prozrazení.
