Mladý anglický lord se svou ženou se po tragickém ztroskotání lodi zachrání na neobydleném pobřeží Afriky. Postaví si nouzové přístřeší a čekají na příležitost k záchraně. Krátce poté, co se jim narodí syn, však oba zahynou. Osiřelé dítě objeví opice a jedna ze samic, která právě přišla o své mládě, se chlapce ujme a vychová ho jako opici. Zpočátku odstrkované "holé mládě" se však jako dospělé stane vůdcem opičí smečky. A právě v této funkci se jednoho dne setká s člověkem, belgickým kapitánem D'Arnotem, který je v Africe na vědecké expedici, a kterého Tarzan zachrání před nepřátelskými domorodci. Překvapený kapitán ho naučí mluvit a když podle důkazů a dokladů, které najde v opuštěné chatrči pochopí, že jeho tajemný zachránce je ve skutečnosti anglickým aristokratem a dědicem značného rodinného jmění, přesvědčí ho, aby s ním odjel do Anglie.
