Zámožná Lina MacLaidlawová (Joan Fontaine) uteče proti vůli rodičů s pohledným Johnniem Aysgarthem (Cary Grant) a pak zjistí, že je zadlužený a bez peněz. Johnnie nemůže najít práci a svatební dary od tchána prodá, aby splatil dluhy. Lina je přesvědčená, že ji Johnnie neopustí. Johnnieho přítel Beaky (Nigel Bruce) za záhadných okolností zemře a Lina se obává, že je za jeho smrt zodpovědný Johnnie. Ten to popírá, ale varuje ji, aby policii neříkala nic o jeho finančních transakcích s Beaky. Lina najde mezi Johnnieho věcmi knihu o jedech.
