Tristan uteče z domova, což není v šestnácti letech zas tak překvapivé, avšak přidá se k pochybné partě. Otec mladíka nedokáže nic podniknout, a tak se bezradná matka uchýlí k riskantní lsti: přesvědčí své dva někdejší přátele - rozcitlivělého smolaře Pignona a mužného sangvinického novináře Lucase, že oni jsou skutečnými otci ztraceného chlapce, a je tedy jejich povinností syna zachránit a vrátit do matčiny náruče. Oba otcové, kteří samozřejmě o sobě vzájemně nevědí, okamžitě podlehnou volání krve. K ctižádosti najít syna se připojí nevraživá ješitnost, co se otcovství týče. Četná úskalí a nebezpečí nutí oba soupeře vzájemně se ochraňovat a tak se mezi nimi postupně vytvoří až dojemně ohleduplné pouto, které mnohé překoná a je na celý život.
