Spencer Tracy jako úspěšný právník Stanley, vdávající svou jedinou dceru Kay má nemalé starosti. Nejdřív si musí ověřit, zda nastávající ženich Buckley je vůbec hoden jeho pokladu a prověřit třeba samozřejmě i jeho rodiče. No a potom přichází zásnuby a samotná příprava svatby, kterou pevně chytí do rukou Stanleyho manželka Ellie. Z původně plánované malé svatby v rodinném kruhu najednou vzniká oslava pro více než pět set hostů s orchestrem a se vším, co k tomu patří. A Stanley se nestačí divit, jakou rychlostí se mění jeho těžce vydělané peníze...
