V kasínu v Las Vegas poznává milionář John Gage Dianu a jejího muže, architekta Davida. Mladí manželé se ocitnou kvůli Davidově nezaměstnanosti ve finanční tísni a rozhodli se všechny peníze vsadit do hry. Bez úspěchu, a proto i po určitém váhaní se rozhodli přijmout Gageův návrh: milionář navrhl Davidovi za jednu noc s jeho ženou milión dolarů. Ráno potom to už mezi Dianou a Davidem není takové jako kdysi. Přestože o předcházející noci nikdy nemluví, stojí stále mezi nimi jako zeď a dvojice se nakonec rozejde. Diana se začne scházet s Gageem a David utápí svůj žal v alkoholu a sebelítosti. Manželé se přesto opět sejdou, protože Gage, který Dianu opravdu miluje, se jí vzdá ve prospěch jejího manžela…
