Mary je prostě úžasná! Kdo už ji nemiluje, brzy do toho spadne. Láska k hezké, chytré, milé a bohaté Mary je nevyhnutelná. Ted o ní snil už na střední škole a i když mu rovnátka na kráse zrovna nepřidala, vybrala si Mary jako doprovod na maturitní ples právě jeho. Jenže Ted má vedle obludných rovnátek i obludnou smůlu. Po sérii trapasů, které jej potkaly v předvečer té velké události u Mary doma, se Ted rozhodl svou vyvolenou raději už nikdy nespatřit. Uběhlo však třináct let a jeho srdce je stále zraněné nenaplněnou láskou. Na radu svého přítele najme Ted soukromého detektiva Healyho, aby Mary vypátral. Odporný Healy se do stále krásné Mary zamiluje a Tedovi nalže o jeho křehké lásce z dětství spoustu nesmyslů. Teda to ale neodradí a rozhodne se údajně tlusté, rozvedené Mary se čtyřmi dětmi pomoc.
