Na francouzském královském dvoře to hýří rozmařilostí, ale lid hladoví. Zatím je v Bastile vězněno královské dvojče v železné masce a čeká ho trýznivý osud. Po dobytí Bastilly objevili revolucionáři záznam o záhadném vězni se železnou maskou, muži, jehož totožnost se nikdy nepodařilo odhalit a dodnes je opředena řadou legend. Jedna z nich tvrdí, že muž byl dvojčetem francouzského krále Ludvíka XIV. a všeobecně známou ji učinil slavný spisovatel Alexandre Dumas, který ji zpracoval do poslední části své ságy o třech, vlastně čtyřech mušketýrech
