Na anglické městečko Midwich zapůsobí tajemné silové pole, které způsobí, že všichni v dosahu jeho účinku usnou. Každá žena v produktivním věku poté otěhotní, včetně dospívajících dívek a žen, jejichž muži nebyli v té době přítomni. Všechny porodí blonďaté, mimořádně inteligentní děti, které ale trpí naprostým nedostatkem emocí. Když se pak vesničané ve strachu spojí, děti prokáží neobyčejnou schopnost kontrolovat jejich vědomí a semknou se proti všem, kdo by je chtěli ohrožovat.
