Melvin je nenapravitelný snílek a také smolař. Manželka jej opustí, nemá práci a smůla se mu lepí na paty ať dělá co dělá. Jednoho večera najde na opuštěné silnici uprostřed pouště zraněného motocyklistu a poskytne mu pomoc. Ke svému údivu se dozvídá, že ten komu tak nezištně pomohl, je excentrický milionář Howard Hughes, ale brzy na to zapomene. Po určitém čase se k němu donese zpráva, že Howard Hughes zemřel a Melvina stanovil dědicem více jak 100 miliónů diolarů. Jeho život to převrátí naruby.
