Larry Flynt je neurvalým a arogantním provokatérem, jenž své chování opírá o svéráznou životní filozofii. Ta se řídí snahou vydělat peníze, a z ní vyplývající potřebou absolutní svobody slova. V období 1972-1987 to ovšem vede ke konfliktu s veřejným míněním a se státními institucemi. Pokrytecká společnost stíhá vyzývavého podnikatele různými způsoby: po atentátu neznámého zabijáka zůstane muž zmrzačený (a nepřímo tak ztrácí i svou životní lásku). Flynt však v sobě znovu najde dost síly, a s pomocí ambiciózního právníka dovede svou věc až k nejvyššímu soudu, kde zvítězí ve své při o svobodu slova.
