Pírko, veterán z války ve Vietnamu, sedí téměř v katatonickém stavu na uzavřeném oddělení psychiatrické léčebny. Přivedla ho sem představa, že je jedním z opeřenců, o kterých už jako malý chlapec snil. Jeho psychiatr se rozhodne povolat na pomoc Pírkova nejlepšího přítele z dětství Ala Columbata. Al, který si z války přinesl své vlastní šrámy, se zoufale snaží přivést kamaráda zpátky do reality. Odpověď možná spočívá hluboko v jejich dětství, kdy si podivín Pírko poprvé navlékl křídla a lehkovážný Al mu pomohl vzlétnout.
