V padesátých letech minulého století je C.S. Lewis uznávaný spisovatel a profesor. Nikdy se neoženil a vede poklidný, uzavřený a kultivovaný staromládenecký život. Ten však rázem vezme za své, když potká energickou básnířku Joy Greshamovou. Joy je odvážná rozvedená Newyorčanka, která si nebere servítky, a jejíž ostré a racionální postoje Lewise překvapují. Když nečekaně vtrhne do spisovatelova světa, šokuje jeho společníky a probudí v něm hluboké city, o kterých sice psal, ale nikdy je nezažil. Lewis začne této ženě pomalu otvírat své srdce a jejich láska zboří hradby jeho uzavřeného světa. Ale život plyne v křehké rovnováze a Lewis je nucen čelit zdrcující pravdě – srdce zaplavené velkou láskou je také otevřené velké bolesti.
