Státní návladní Victor Scott už poslal na elektrické křeslo hezkou řádku lidí. Vyhrával kauzy s pompou a grácií nejúspěšnějšího žalobce v zemi. Každý ale dřív nebo později udělá chybu. Také jeho poslední případ vyzněl jasně, nezpochybnitelný rozsudek smrti pro Edwarda Claryho. V poslední chvíli se ale k vraždě mladé ženy přiznal někdo jiný. Jenže bylo už pozdě a Edward Clary se stal nešťastnou obětí justičního omylu. Zdrcený Scott spadl z vrcholu rovnou na dno. Rezignoval na svůj post, utápěl svůj žal mísený se vztekem v alkoholu, až sám skončil před soudem za výtržnictví. Tehdy ho napadlo, že právo přeci hájil dlouho a svědomitě, a přece ne dost dobře. Co kdyby teď pomáhal těm z „druhé strany"? Hned prvním případem si ale ukousl příliš velké sousto.
