Rubin Carter, který si v ringu vydobyl přezdívku Hurikán, byl černým koněm střední váhy. Jeho sny o mistrovském titulu jsou rozmetány ve chvíli, kdy je zatčen, obviněn z trojnásobné vraždy a díky nenávistnému policistovi a zastrašeným zmanipulovaným svědkům i odsouzen. Hurikán v rámci boje o zachování lidské důstojnosti a zdravého rozumu sepíše v cele svou autobiografii s přiléhavým názvem Šestnácté kolo. Roky letí, přes protesty a podporu populárních osobností Boba Dylana a Muhammada Aliho, zůstává Hurikán díky neúspěšným odvolacím soudům ve vězení. Jeho kniha se z pultů bestsellerů dávno přesunula do regálů v antikvariátech. Přesto mu právě ona přinese po dvaceti letech za mřížemi vysněnou a spravedlivou svobodu. Mladičký černoch, pocházející ze stejně nuzných podmínek jako Hurikán, dokáže společně se svými pěstouny neuvěřitelné.
