Ve světě Alfreda Hitchcocka je divadlo místem, kde se v kulisách skrývá nebezpečí, postavy nejsou tím, čím se zdají být a v každém okamžiku může spadnout "závěrečná opona”. Z této zábavní tradice vychází i burleska Hrůza na jevišti. Jane Wyman tu hraje studentku herectví Eve Gillovou, která se snaží očistit svého přítele (Richard Todd), obviněného z vraždy, a stane se proto služkou extravagantní divadelní hvězdy Charlotte Inwoodové (Marlene Dietrich). Film, který Hitchcock natáčel ve své rodné Anglii, si obratně pohrává s prvky humoru a detektivky a dává prostor všem hráčům této hry (Alastair Sim, Sybil Thorndike, Joyce Grenfell, Kay Walsh a režisérova dcera Patricia Hitchcock). Nikdo nedokáže proměnit divadlo v zámek hrůzy tak účinně jako Hitchcock a Hrůza na jevišti je toho přesvědčivým důkazem.
