Je počátek května roku 1940. V Londýně vládne klid a jeho obyvatelé, ukolébáni falešnou atmosférou bezpečí, se věnují svým každodenním radostem i starostem. Ani oficiální válečné komuniké nehlásí žádný významný pohyb na frontě. Ale válečný zpravodaj Charles Foreman ví své. Tuší, že situace ve Francii se obrací k horšímu, a proto se dobrovolně přihlásí k námořnictvu, aby se mohl účastnit dosud největší válečné operace - evakuace Spojenců z Dunkerque. K tomuto městu se zatím z celé Francie stahují, respektive probíjejí spojenecké jednotky. Málokdo ovšem tuší, co je tam čeká. Z pláží u Dunkerque bylo tehdy evakuováno 300 tisíc mužů, tisíce jich však nepřežily německé letecké útoky nebo padly do zajetí.
