Osudy dvou mužů z naprosto opačných konců tohoto světa se protnou - rabín Jákob jede z New Yorku do Francie, kde už několik desítek let nebyl. Zavítá sem kvůli Bar Micvah - židovskému náboženskému obřadu jeho mladého příbuzného - chlapce Davida. Naproti tomu Viktor Datel, který co nevidět provdá dceru, má úplně jiné starosti - spěchá ve svém autě s lodí na střeše (anebo obráceně) co nejrychleji domů, aby vše v pořádku stihl. Je to člověk bohatý a uspěchaný - ale také podezřívavý a netolerantní. Hodně se však změní, když je nucen se přestrojit za člověka, se kterým nemá naprosto nic společného, a prchat před mnohými lidmi, dokonce i před svou manželkou...
