Při přepadení banky je stárnoucí gangster Walker (Lee Marvin) postřelen svým komplicem, který vzápětí zmizí s ukradenými penězi i s ženou svého přítele. Walker se dostane do pověstné věznice v Alcatrazu, kde si musí odpykat dlouholetý trest. Po celou dobu svého trestu je posedlý jedinou myšlenkou-jak krutě se pomstí zrádnému společníkovi a nevěrné ženě. Když však je konečně najde, zjistí náhle, že má co dělat s celou zločineckou organizací....
