Jednoho letního dne roku 1917 dorazí do malebného městečka kdesi ve Walesu dvojice kartografů – mladý Reginald Anson, který se vrátil z válečné řeže ve Francii a jeho zkušený kolega George Garrad. Přišli proto, aby změřili místní dominantu – Fynnon Garw. Když se však místní lidé dovědí, že jejich hora neměří tisíc stop a tudíž není ničím více, než jen kopcem a nebude zanesena na královských mapách, rozhodnou se zakročit a chybějících dvacet stop hodlají vlastníma rukama na vrcholek doplnit. Je to otázka vlastní hrdosti a cti ve chvíli, kdy všichni mladší muži z městečka odešli na bojiště první světové války...
