Leo, Donnie, Raph a Mikey jsou zpět, tedy přesněji řečeno přicházejí v nové podobě. Třetí seriálové zpracování původně komiksového konceptu Kevina Eastmana a Petera Lairda přináší zcela nové pojetí čtveřice zmutovaných želv vycvičených v japonských bojových uměních. Tvůrci jednak zvolili nápaditou animaci, která kombinuje počítačově vytvořené 3D modely s flashovou animací a komiksovými zkratkami a symboly. Kreativní a odlehčený vizuální styl výtečně souzní se zastřešujícím zaměřením seriálu na mladší děti. Namísto siláctví druhého seriálového zpracování z roku 2003 tak nový seriál vzniklý v produkci dětského televizního kanálu Nickelodeon vyniká nadsázkou a hravými nápady, ale i nosnými změnami oproti tradičním prvkům želváckého světa. Samotní čtyři hrdinové v krunýřích jsou profilováni ne jako nebojácní bojovníci, ale spíš coby kluci, kteří postupně poznávají svět kolem sebe a učí se zdokonalovat své schopnosti. April O'Neilová tentokrát není dospělá reportérka, ale v souladu s omlazením hlavních postav se z ní stala šestnáctiletá holka, která se náhodou s želváky skamarádila a díky výcviku pod vedením mistra Třísky často hrdinům výrazně pomáhá. V různě pozměněné podobě se objevují také tradiční záporáci v čele s Trhačem a mimozemským padouchem Krangem. Seriál se díky svěžímu zpracování stal hitem a úspěšně přetavil klasický koncept do moderního díla pro novou generaci televizních diváků.
