Two young women at the end of a long, bitter war. Two soldiers who left distant Canada to liberate Europe. But the maelstrom of events gives their love little chance. Maria from Breda experiences liberation as an unreal intoxication. A brief moment of naive infatuation throws her life completely off balance. Maria gives birth to a child under appalling conditions, in a home for unmarried mothers. She is forced to give up the child.
