Seriál se odehrává v 50. letech 19. století. Hlavním hrdinou je kapitán Charles Boone, který se se svými třemi dětmi přestěhuje do starého domu v malém a zdánlivě ospalém městečku Preacher's Corners v Maine poté, co jeho manželka zemře. Charles však brzy bude muset čelit temným rodinným tajemstvím z historie a bojovat proti temnotě, která zahalovala Booneovi po celé generace.
