Mistrovský snímek se odehrává ve dvou stejně dlouhých kapitolách, jejichž hlavním hrdinou je inteligentní voják s přezdívkou Vtipálek. První část se odehrává ve výctikovém středisku námořní pěchoty v Jižní Karolíně, kde sadistický instruktor Hartman psychicky i fyzicky týrá svěřené nováčky. Ne každý je schopen takový dril přežít a zachovat si zdravé myšlení. Druhá část se již odehrává na vietnamské frontě, kde se i Vtipálek musí uchýlit k tomu nejhoršímu činu.
