Richard Wagner je považován za hlavního reformátora opery 19. století. Realizaci jeho nových ideí reformovaného operního díla předcházel vznik několika spisů, jejichž obsah shrnuje a domýšlí ve svém teoretickém chef d‘oeuvre Opera a drama (1850). Wagner v něm osvětluje své vlastní tvůrčí zásady, osobitě komentuje operní dílo svých předchůdců a současníků a dotýká se mnoha obecných estetických otázek hudby a operní dramaturgie. Spis Opera a drama je v mnohém směru stále aktuální a může i dnes zajímat zvláště teatrology a odborníky ze všech oborů divadelní teorie a praxe, hudební vědce a pedagogy, hudební a divadelní kritiky a publicisty, ale i zvídavé laiky.Richard Wagner (1813-1883) skládal ke svým dílům nejen hudbu, ale i jevištní básně (starší termín libreto nepoužíval). V trojici oper Bludný Holanďan (1841), Tannhäuser (1845) a Lohengrin (1848) převládá ještě romantická operní poetika. Tzv. hudební dramata, tetralogie Nibelungův prsten (obrovské dílo, na kterém pracoval plných 26 let, bylo dokončeno r. 1874), Tristan a Isolda (1857-1859), Mistři pěvci norimberští (1867) a Parsifal (1882), vznikla na principu „souborného uměleckého díla“ (Gesamtkunstwerku) v jednotě básnického slova, hudby, hereckého projevu a scény.
