Animovaný film Farma zvířat z roku 1954, oproti knižní předloze náležitě upravený, byl plně v její režii... Autor, který tak bravurně popisoval mechanismy totalitního systému, propagandy a demagogie, nemohl tušit, že předmětem manipulace se stane samotné jeho dílo...Farmy zvířat se dovolávali prakticky všichni – konzervativci, liberálové, a to pravicoví i levicoví, ale také socialisté, a je třeba říct, že právem. Vždyť jestliže autor svou knihou chtěl před veřejností, zvláště pak britskou, „demaskovat sovětský mý¬tus“, činil tak podle svých slov v zájmu demokratického socialismu: „… A proto jsem přesvědčen, že zničení sovětského mýtu je pro obrodu socia¬listického hnutí zcela zásadní.“Můžeme si položit otázku, jaký mýtus by demaskoval dnes…Nové vydání je doplněno desítkami obrazů ukrajinského malíře Iwana Kulika, jehož dílo čtenáři znají z ilustrované edice románu Mistr a Markétka, která vyšla v roce 2020. Součástí knihy je i předmluva k ukrajinskému vydání z roku 1947, jediný Orwellův publikovaný úvod k Farmě zvířat a současně jediný autorův osobní komentář ke genezi knihy.

Román 1984 George Orwella (1903-1950) předkládá obraz totalitní společnosti, v níž je jedinec jen dočasnou položku na seznamu, který lze kdykoliv změnit, přepsat či úplně vymazat. Na jedinci nezáleží, důležitá je MOC. Moc odosobnělá, respektive zosobněná imaginárním Velkým bratrem. Kniha bývá charakterizována jako dílo odhalující princip fungování totalitních režimů, čímž se donedávna mínily především režimy fašistické a komunistické. Jako varovný popis možného vývoje "západních" společností byl zmiňován spíše román Aldouse Huxleyho Konec civilizace. Bohužel, jak naznačuje současný vývoj, Orwellova a Huxleyho vize se podivně proplétají. I dnes si nikdo nemůže být jist, kým, proč a jak bude odposloucháván, analyzován, zneužit, zmanipulován, převychováván či - prozatím jen společensky -"vypařen". Není náhodou, že Orwellovu knihu, napsanou v roce 1948, zařadil časopis Time mezi sto nejvlivnějších knih vydaných od roku 1923. Kniha vychází v novém překladu Luboše Snížka, s již klasickým doslovem - rozsáhlou esejí Milana Šimečky Náš soudruh Winston Smith.

V prosinci 1936 se vydal George Orwell do Španělska, aby zde na republikánské straně bojoval proti Frankovým nacionalistům. Přestože ho Henry Miller v Paříži od úmyslu jít do války zrazoval, Orwell se připojil k milicím POUM na aragonské frontě. V bojích utrpěl vážné zranění, když mu nepřátelský ostřelovač prostřelil krk, a po uzdravení byl donucen za zhoršující se politické situace ze Španělska uprchnout.
