Příběh nás zanese do Equestrie, kouzelného světa poníků, jednorožců a pegasů, kde vládne princezna Celestie. Poníci v tomto světě mají lidské vlastnosti, a to dobré i špatné. Hlavní hrdinkou je studentka princezny Celestie, Twilight Sparkle. Ta je vyslána spolu se svým kamarádem, drakem jménem Spike, do vesničky Ponyville, kde má dohlédnout na přípravy slavnosti. I když je Twilight nejprve poněkud samotářská, brzy pozná pravé kouzlo přátelství. Rozhodne se tedy v Ponyville zůstat a spolu s přáteli Applejackem, Rarity, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash a Fluttershy zažívá spoustu dobrodružství.
